Candidate for applying for a PhD grant

Posted on Jan 9, 2015 in Research

The SIPOMICS (SIgnal Processing for Omic ScienceS) research Group from the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) is seeking candidates for applying for a FPU predoctoral grant. SIPOMICS is a multidisciplinary research Group formed by chemists, biochemists, computer and telecommunication engineers and it is part of the Metabolomics Platform

The candidate will be involved in a multidisciplinary research project focus on environmental metabolomics and, specifically, on the detection of biomarkers of passive smoking exposure. The research will imply the development of analytical methods, based on GC-MS, GCxGC-TOF/MS, HPLC-MS/MS and MALDI-TOF/MS and data analysis using statistical tools.

Requirements:

-         BsC on Chemistry or similar.

-         MsC on analytical chemistry, chemometrics, bioinformatics or related fields.

-         Excellent academic record (>7.5 for the degree and >8.25 for the master, call requirements).

-         Clear motivation for research and the research field.

Candidates should send their CV to Dr. Serena Pujol (serena.pujol@urv.cat) no later than the 27th of January. A letter of research interests and intentions may be included in the application as well as recommendation letters from tutors or mentors, if available.

Incorporation of Dr. Noelia Ramírez as a postdoctoral researcher

Posted on Dec 22, 2014 in Research

Dr. Noelia Ramírez, PhD on Analytical Chemistry, has joined the Metabolomics Platform as a postdoctoral researcher. Her research is focused on the development and validation of analytical methods for metabolite profiling and biomarkers detection by GC-MS, GC×GC-TOF/MS and MS imaging. She also works onenvironmental metabolomics, especially on thirdhand tobacco smoke characterization and health effects.

Incorporation of Dr. Radu Ionescu as a postdoctoral researcher

Posted on Dec 18, 2014 in Research

Dr. Radu Ionestu joined the Metabolomics Platform as a postdoctoral researcher with a grant Ramon y Cajal.

Dr. Radu Ionescu is performing research in the field of non-invasive diseases diagnostics, prognosis, and monitoring. He works on diseases profiling and fingerprinting via the analysis of volatolomic samples (volatiles released by different body fluids such as exhaled breath, skin headspace and urine headspace) with analytical chemistry equipment and chemical gas sensors devices.

Dr. Roger Mallol wins the “Premi Pioner 2014″

Posted on Dec 18, 2014 in Research

The CERCA Institution (Centres de Recerca de Catalunya) has awarded Roger Mallol with the prize Pioner 2014 for his thesis:

“Development and evaluation of a novel advanced lipoprotein test based on 2D Diffusion-ordered 1H NMR Spectroscopy”.

The jury has valued its originality in helping to  improve cardiovascular risk factors, the methodological contribution of research and industrial commitment shown by adequate protection of intellectual property and the creation of the spin-off Biosfer Teslab.

PhD Scholarship position for the application of Bioinformatics to Metabolomics

Posted on Jul 23, 2014 in Education, Research

The SIPOMICS (SIgnal Processing for OMIC Sciences) research group from the Rovira i Virgili University is seeking candidates to apply for a scholarship to obtain the PhD at our research facilities located in Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain).

The position is intended for candidates with a Signal Processing, Data Analysis, Biostatistics and/or a Bioinformatics background. The thesis to be developed will focus on data processing for Omics Sciences, mainly for Metabolomics studies where Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and GC/MS data will need to be conditioned, processed, and correlated with clinical biomarkers in order to turn raw measurement data into useful clinical information.

Candidates need to have a bachelor and a master degree to be eligible for the position.

SIPOMICS is a multidisciplinary research group formed by chemists, bio-chemists, computer and telecommunication engineers that has a direct relationship with a metabolomics platform structure (www.metabolomicsplatform.com) that collaborates very closely with the 32 best Spanish research groups in Diabetes and related illnesses under a common cyber-institute. Other research interests include Obesity, general Metabolism Pathways and Lipidomics. The group is also interested in functional foods with food-related companies and research groups.

Tarragona is a Mediterranean city with a mild climate, 100km South- East of Barcelona (an hour by car) with a good transportation/communication infrastructure (low cost airlines serve Tarragona’s airport and TGV trains give service to the city) and many cultural and ludic activities, including nice beaches, archaeological museums (with many Roman ruins) and touristic facilities.

Candidates should send their CV to Dr. Jesus Brezmes through his email address (jesus.brezmes@urv.cat) no later than September 1st. A letter of research interest and intentions would be greatly appreciated as well as recommendation letters from tutors or mentors if available.
